Given concerns about global climate change and corresponding efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the Electric Vehicle (EV) market is projected to grow significantly. Omdia, a global market research firm estimates that the global EV market is expected to grow 27% annually between 2022 and 2025. As such, demand for high-efficiency and durable BLDC motors for EVs will increase and Medium Voltage (MV) MOSFETs are essential for BLDC motors to operate efficiently. Magnachip has developed a new 40V MOSFET featuring low RDS(on)* to reduce the conduction loss of automotive BLDC motors and the company began mass production of this new MOSFET in April 2022.

As reliable automotive semiconductors are critical to vehicle safety, the new 40V MOSFET is fully AEC-Q101 (Automotive Electronics Council-Q101) certified. The first application of this new product is for the Electric Water Pump of a new EV model from a global auto manufacturer. This MOSFET is also suitable for a variety of BLDC applications, such as electric oil pumps, engine cooling fans, electric power steering and battery cooling fans.

Magnachip continues to expand its market share in the automotive semiconductor sector with new products and advanced technology. SEOUL, South Korea, March 15, 2022 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX) announced today that the company has released a synchronous boost converter for a variety of applications, such as NAND flashes for SSDs, OLED panels and Bluetooth speakers.

The new synchronous boost converter is equipped with a fast transient response to reduce output voltage fluctuations in a short response time for stable power supply. Therefore, the new product is ideally suited for devices, which can exhibit significant current variations.

The key feature of this newly released converter is a reduction in quiescent current of up to 1.5mA, as compared to the maximum 2mA of asynchronous boost converters currently on the market. Magnachip achieves this metric by the adoption of low-resistance high-side and low-side synchronous switches. Also, when a boost converter turns off, a built-in isolation switch prevents input voltage from being leaked through the output pin. And the soft-start time can be programmable by controlling the external capacitor and resistance values. This action reduces the in-rush current and ensures a stable power supply to external circuits.

This synchronous boost converter also provides strong circuit protection functions of overcurrent and overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, fast discharge function and under voltage lockout in a small Dual Flat No Leads package (DFN) of 2.5mm x 2.5mm. It operates at the switching frequency of 1.2MHz, so a small-sized 4.7µH inductor with low capacity can be connected externally. As a result, the size of printed circuit board (PCB) will be reduced as well.

In addition, its packaging technology meets halogen-free requirements and also complies with the Restriction of the Use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) – another example of Magnachip’s commitment to deliver environmentally-friendly and sustainable semiconductor products.

The new 2.5th generation (2.5G) 600V SJ MOSFETs were developed using new designs based on the latest process technology to improve switching functionality by more than 10% compared to previous generations. As a result, Magnachip has achieved lower switching loss and better power efficiency. For applications requiring high Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) ruggedness, a Zener diode is embedded between a gate and source in order to avoid damage to a MOSFET from an external surge or ESD.

The new product family of 600V SJ MOSFETs supports an Rds(on) (drain-source on resistance) of 190~580mOhm and comes in standard packaging formats, such as DPAK, TO-220F and TO-220SF. Therefore, these new 2.5G products can be widely used in products and applications including TVs, lighting infrastructure, fast chargers, adapters, PC power and industrial power supplies. They are also well suited for hard- and soft-switching topologies.

Magnachip has been delivering high-performance MOSFETs for the last 10 years. Cumulative shipments have now reached 2 billion units since the release of its first SJ MOSFET in 2013. Magnachip has supplied its current flagship 600V SJ MOSFETs to the world’s largest TV manufacturers and solidified its competitive edge in the SJ MOSFET market. As demand for high-end 5G and LTE smartphones increases, extended battery life and strengthened protection features for batteries are becoming important. 5G phones, in particular, need long-lasting batteries with high endurance to process the large amount of data for fast download and upload. Magnachip developed the new generation LV MOSFETs with advanced overvoltage and overcurrent protection features to extend battery life and reduce overheating issues. Magnachip began mass production of this new 6.5th generation (6.5G) product last month and it is being used in a new 2022 flagship model from one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers.

The Rss(on) of this new 6.5G product is 20% lower than the previous version with the same chip size to reduce current loss and improve heat dissipation. This lower Rss(on) controls a high power density above 25W to prevent a battery from overheating and protect the PCM while the battery is being fast-charged. Also, PCM functionality has been greatly enhanced by an upgraded Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection diode. This diode mitigates a maximum of 2kV, based on the human-body model, of ESD to strengthen circuit protection and prevent damage to other smartphone components. Along with this powerful battery protection, the size of chip was significantly reduced to better meet the requirements of new smartphone models.

According to Omdia, a market research firm, the global smartphone market will grow 6.3%, with more than 1.4 billion units sold in 2022. The wireless earphone market is also rapidly growing, which will further drive up the demand for LV MOSFETs. Magnachip has sold more than 1.3 billion units of LV MOSFETs in the last 10 years and more than 900 million units of MOSFETs for battery PCMs. Leveraging its industry-leading technological know-how and business expertise, the company plans to reinforce its market leadership commensurate with the growth of the high-end 5G smartphone market.

SEOUL, South Korea, March 15, 2021 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX) announced today that the company has released a new Low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator featuring an ultra-fast transient response for a Universal Flash Storage (UFS)-based Multi-Chip Package (MCP).

UFS is an advanced version of an Embedded Multi-Media Controller (eMMC), which was developed for concurrent read and write performance at higher speeds. UFS-based MCP is a memory module that integrates UFS controller and memory ICs, such as DRAM or NAND flash. It is mainly used for the storage function in smartphones.

Magnachip’s LDO linear regulator is designed for the power supply of NAND flash in UFS-based MCP with an input voltage of up to 500mA. It reduces input noise with its power supply rejection ratio function, while providing a low-leakage current of 75uA in deep sleep mode, which will enhance battery life and power efficiency.

A key feature of this new product is ultra-fast transient response, minimizing output-voltage fluctuations. Frequent changes in voltage normally occur in UFS-based MCPs due to varying levels of read and write performance. However, ultra-fast transient response regulates these fluctuations to a steady state within 100 nanoseconds.

The line regulation and load regulation in UFS-based MCP is maintained at 0.2% and 0.5% respectively, which will guarantee stable power supply. In addition, the dropout voltage is as low as 0.3V, which makes the linear regulator perfect for low-power domain operations of batteries.

This linear regulator also ensures robust circuit protection, such as overcurrent protection, thermal shutdown and the power good signal, which indicates that all of the output voltages are within specification.

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 17, 2020 — Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Magnachip”) (NYSE: MX), announced today a new line of power management integrated circuit (PMIC) by introducing its first UHD display panel PMIC for laptops.

PMICs are integrated circuits that include multiple power management functions within a single chip, and they are frequently used to power space-constrained devices where high-efficient and compact form factors are required. They are essential for battery-operated devices since the battery life depends on the efficiency of the PMIC’s power management capabilities.

Magnachip entered the market ten years ago, and since then it has developed and delivered industry-leading PMIC products for a variety of applications, including BLU drivers for TVs and AC Directs for LED lighting. Today, Magnachip’s PMICs are widely recognized in the industry for their advanced technology and outstanding quality. The newly released UHD display panel PMIC for laptops incorporates the company’s latest PMIC technologies.

For instance, the new PMIC controls electricity consumption through I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) technology, which ensures that functions such as dynamic voltage management, on/off block, protection circuit fault flag and switching frequency transition in UHD display panels are performed seamlessly.

The new PMIC is a monolithic IC which includes one boost regulator for the power supply to source and gate drivers, three high-current buck regulators for power supply to a timing controller, two Op-Amp for gamma buffer and one each positive and negative charge pumps. This level of integration results in smaller and faster electronic circuits. Other features include fast transient response and enhanced circuit protection measures.

Therefore, the new PMIC can help address changes in current consumption and protects devices from damage with functions such as: over voltage protection, short circuit protection, under voltage lockout, over current detection, over current limit and thermal shutdown. In addition, the new PMIC also offers constant current mode and dynamic switching frequency, which gives product designers more flexibility in meeting specific requirements of application.

Magnachip began SJ MOSFET development in 2013. Cumulative shipments have now reached 1.5 billion units, and the company’s flagship 600V SJ MOSFETs have been supplied to, among others, the world’s largest TV brands in Korea. Magnachip is now taking the next step by launching next generations of high-voltage SJ MOSFETs.

Magnachip entered the China market and is poised to expand its 700V product offerings to China’s leading TV manufacturers. Magnachip is taking this step to address market opportunities such as that described by OMDIA, a global market research firm, who ranked three Chinese TV manufacturers in the top five worldwide as of 3Q 2020, in terms of shipments.

The new 800V SJ MOSFETs are designed for indoor LED lighting, fast charger devices and other industrial applications that have high or unstable input voltages. They feature an embedded zener diode between gate and source in order to avoid damage from an external surge or electro-static discharge, thereby improving robustness and reliability. Further, Magnachip has reduced the total gate charge by 30 percent, compared to previous versions, which improves power efficiency and reduces switching loss. The new product family of 800V SJ MOSFETs is efficient and stable, satisfying the latest design requirements from customers.

SEOUL, South Korea, September 15, 2020 — Maganachip Semiconductor Corporation (“Maganachip” or the “Company”) (NYSE:MX) today announced the launch of two new LED Driver ICs for UHD TV BLU (Back Light Unit). The two new models are 1-channel and 2-channel products developed for mid-range UHD TVs. An essential component of LED display panels, a BLU LED Driver IC is a power semiconductor device that delivers consistent lighting across the LED display panel. It enables the BLU to adjust ambient light settings and generate a consistent image quality.

The new 1-channel and 2-channel products feature higher contrast ratio and improved power efficiency as a result of implementing a combined solution of analog and Pulse-width Modulation (PWM) dimming technologies. Dimming technology enables LEDs to vary intensity in order to suit the image characteristics and is crucial in achieving stable brightness adjustment. The new models also have diverse circuit protection functions including Short Circuit Protection, Under Voltage Lockout, Over-Duty Protection, Current-Sense Resistor Short Protection and Drain-Source Short Protection. These features provide a distinct advantage in protecting the main circuit by supplying consistent power and preventing a short circuit even under varying electrical flow conditions.

According to OMDIA, a global market research firm, UHD TV display panel shipments are expected to reach 160 million units in 2020, or approximates 57% of the whole TV panel market, and grow to about 195 million units by 2025, taking 69% of the TV panel market.

MagnaChip Launches New MOSFET to Enhance Protection for Wireless Earphones While Recharging

SEOUL, South Korea and SAN JOSE, Calif.

 

MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip” or the “Company”) (NYSE: MX), a designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, announced today the company is entering the wireless earphone market with the introduction of a new MOSFET for wireless earphones for preventing the battery from overcharging. This MOSFET is designed to control excessive current flowing into wireless earphones while recharging the battery in order to protect wireless earphones from being damaged.

Since 2010, MagnaChip has been providing the world’s highest volume of MOSFETs for smartphone battery charging protection. MagnaChip expects that the Company’s place as the global leading supplier of MOSFETs will be solidified by virtue of increased demand in the variety of electronic products including wireless earphones.

In particular, it is the industry’s expectation that the size of the wireless earphone market may jump from 120 million units in 2019 to 230 million units in 2020, with subsequent annual growth rate as high as 90 percent.

The new MOSFET is designed to prevent damage to the delicate circuitry of the wireless earphone charging case by blocking excessive voltage from flowing to the charger. It also allows for highly-stable charging environment by blocking electrostatic discharge as high as 2kV from penetrating into the earphone charger, which often occurs during recharging. In addition to implementing strategies to increase the market share of MOSFETs for wireless earphones, MagnaChip is poised to expand the application of MOSFETs into wearable products such as smartwatches and VR (Virtual Reality) headsets.

MagnaChip Offers 0.13 micron BCD Process with Enhanced Performance Suitable for Automotive Power Semiconductors

 

SEOUL, South Korea and SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip”) (NYSE: MX), a Korea-based designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, announced today that it now offers a 0.13 micron BCD process with improved performance to help automotive power semiconductor designers build more competitive products.

BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) is a process technology that combines three different process technologies onto a single chip: Bipolar for analog signal control and CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) and DMOS (Double Diffused Metal Oxide Semiconductor) for digital signal control and high-power handling, used primarily for power semiconductors. In particular, the process announced today has been certified as Grade-1 under AEC-Q100, a reliability standard for automotive electronics and, therefore, is suitable for diverse automotive power semiconductors — including motor driver ICs, BMSs (Battery Management Systems) and DC-DC ICs. With the introduction of this process, the company plans to launch targeted marketing activities to attract more automotive semiconductor designers as customers.

Driven by the adoption of electric vehicles, the automotive semiconductor sector – including power products – is projected to see considerable growth over the next five years. According to IHS Markit technology research, now a part of Informa Tech, the automotive semiconductor market is forecasted to grow from $42 billion in 2019 to approximately $60 billion in 2023.*

The MTP (Multi-Time Programming) IP applied to this newly enhanced 0.13 micron BCD process technology enables a chip to be reprogrammed at least 1000 times, a desirable feature for power semiconductors that require repeatable memory programming, such as motor driver ICs, power management ICs and level shifter ICs. Also, unlike the previous 0.13 micron BCD process technology, which requires additional photo layers to realize MTP IPs, this new 0.13 micron BCD process does not require additional photo layers as a result of IP design optimization. By virtue of no additional layers, MagnaChip’s new 0.13 micron BCD process could allow its customers to reduce cost and shorten the “time-to-market.”
