Currently, the market demand is increasing dramatically for AC-powered products, including LED lighting drivers, AC-DC converter ICs and AC-DC chargers commonly found in home appliances. As such, due to increased competition, the cost competitiveness of these products, manufactured using UHV technologies, is becoming a critical factor for IC providers. Therefore, to meet these market needs, MagnaChip has successfully reduced device sizes of UHV nLDMOS by 30% and JFET by 50% from its previous generation. Furthermore, MagnaChip’s latest UHV technology, designated as HP35ULC700, shortens the manufacturing process and reduces cost by having seven photolithographic steps less than the Company’s previous generation, which was achieved by simplifying the front end process and reducing the minimum metal number from two to one.

UHV technologies have multiple requirements because different systems and IC schemes are used in various applications. To cover various requirements, MagnaChip offers multiple UHV technologies in terms of gate oxide schemes. When high system integration is necessary, dual gate oxide UHV technology can be used that provides the optimized low voltage, high voltage, and ultra-high voltage devices. When manufacturing cost is important and control logic device density is high, low-voltage single-gate oxide UHV technology can be used. When manufacturing cost is important and superior high-voltage performance to drive external discrete high voltage MOSFETs is necessary, high voltage single-gate oxide UHV technology can be used.

In addition, UHV devices with different operation voltages from 350V to 700V are provided in MagnaChip’s UHV technologies, as AC-DC converter voltage requirements vary by country. Additional option devices that can enable the integrated solution of AC-DC converter ICs and LED driver ICs are 700V nLDMOS integrated with 700V JFET, Zener diode, 700V resistor, thin film resistor, MIM capacitance and fuse.

Low-Rss(on) LV MOSFET for Battery Protection Circuit Modules

 

SEOUL, South Korea and SAN JOSE, Calif., June 26, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip” or the “Company”) (NYSE: MX), a designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, announced today a new low-Rss(on)* LV (Low Voltage) MOSFET with reduced chip size for smartphone battery PCMs (Protection Circuit Modules).

Extended life and increased protection for batteries in high-end LTE and 5G smartphones are becoming increasingly important. 5G phones, in particular, need longer-lasting batteries with higher endurance than previous smartphones to process the massive amount of data with extremely fast download and upload capabilities. Inserted in the battery PCMs in LTE or 5G phones, this newly released MOSFET prevents over-voltage and over-current of the batteries and ultimately helps extend their life and resolve the overheating issue.

The Rss(on) of this new product, 20 percent lower than previous versions with the same chip size, prolongs the life of smartphone batteries by decreasing current loss and improving heat dissipation. This lower Rss(on) also enables higher-power density than previous versions to prevent over-heating of the battery during a quick charge (a feature supported by most of the latest smartphones). PCM functionality is also enhanced by an ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection diode added to the product. This diode mitigates ESDs of ≤ 2 kV to strengthen circuit protection and prevents damage to other smartphone components.

MagnaChip also has reduced the chip size of this new MOSFET by 10 percent (as compared to other LV MOSFETs currently on the MagnaChip portfolio), which offers greater design flexibility for circuit designers and even shrinks the PCM itself. With this reduction in size, WLCSP (Wafer Level Chip Scale Package) is possible for this product.

For high-resolution UHD displays, this new standard display product is designed to control the local LED dimming of up to 270 LEDs through a maximum of 90 LEDs per channel. In addition, it provides a dual dimming solution with Analog and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) for efficient and stable LED dimming, which reduces power consumption and helps achieve a high contrast ratio in UHD TVs.

Analog dimming, a type of LED dimming technology, adjusts the brightness of the LED by controlling the amount of current flowing through the LED in a linear manner. With this solution, the LED color changes when the current fluctuates. By contrast, PWM dimming is a method to minimize the color change. MagnaChip’s new 3-channel BLU LED Driver is designed to selectively use analog or PWM dimming according to the image signal, thus providing the solution to realize high contrast ratio and power efficiency.

The BLU LED driver also provides for high current accuracy within ±1% tolerance by using the average mode of the current control technology. In addition, this product supports Low PWM Dimming by operating at 480 kHz High speed Switching Frequency to elaborately control the current in the dark area of the image with a narrow pulse width.

Other advantages of MagnaChip’s BLU LED driver are that it provides various circuit protection functions, including short-circuit protection and under-voltage lockout (UVLO) to attain high reliability. In addition, this product features over-duty protection, which keeps the PWM duty ratio (on/off ratio) constant. It also provides for current-sense resistor short protection, which prevents over-current from flowing into a specific area of the circuit. MOSFET drain-source short protection also detects and protects the shorts of the MOSFETs in the circuit.

An LDO regulator is a power standard product whose function can be designed into various components.

An LDO regulator is a DC voltage regulator that can regulate an output voltage even when the supply voltage is immensely close to the output voltage. The advantages of a LDO regulator over other DC-to-DC regulators include the absence of switching noise, smaller device size, and greater design simplicity.

A BGA SSD refers to an SSD that integrates an SSD controller and a memory chip, such as DRAM and NAND flash, into a Ball Grid Array package. It is about 60 percent smaller than a non-BGA SSD in size and, therefore, mainly used in mobile devices such as notebook PCs, tablets PCs and smartphones.

The new product is developed especially for the stringent requirements of a BGA SSD power supply and provides a stable 1.2V output voltage in the 1.65V to 3.3V input voltage range. It also is capable of supplying a maximum current of 500mA and, by virtue of a high Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR), it can remove input power noise. In addition, the product realizes a low quiescent current of 75uA, which increases the power efficiency of mobile devices and extends battery life.

By design, a BGA SSD has a high variation in its read / write load, which requires a stable power supply. To meet this requirement, the new LDO regulator features an industry leading 0.5% fast transient response. MagnaChip also promotes greater product safety by building in protection against current surges above rated specifications and enhanced power monitoring features.

The new IGBT P-series (“MBW100T120PHF”) has both high current and high voltage capabilities of 1200V and 100A, and has achieved a low saturation voltage Vce(sat) of 1.71V and low switching losses by using Field-Stop Trench technology. MBW100T120PHF allows designers to operate devices at an improved switching frequency, which enables reducing the size and cost of capacitors and inductive devices in circuits. To product designers, this translates into high power density, small size and low material cost of products. MBW100T120PHF is operable up to four times the rated current, and with a wide SOA (Safe Operating Area) well-suited for industrial applications which require high power. The device with two package types, I-PAK and D-PAK, will sample to customers in November 2018 and will be manufactured in high volume in early first quarter of next year.

90R1K4P features the maximum peak voltage of 950V and a breakdown voltage as high as 900V, which enables enhanced system stability and reliability. It is well-suited for high-voltage applications such as:

● an auxiliary power supply for industrial smart metering, which uses a three-phase input power to alternate current electric power generation,
transmission, and distribution.
● the lighting of flyback topology in both AC/DC and DC/DC high-speed switching converters.
● a power supply for lighting equipment due to its characteristics of high stability that help prevent an unstable system condition that could lead
to outages.

90R1K4P increases its switching speed due to its low total gate charge (Qg), which reduces heat generation in the system, keeps power loss down and improves energy efficiency. It also enables smaller form factors than the High-Voltage Planar MOSFET, since the die size of 90R1K4P is more than 50% smaller under the same condition of conduction loss.

To enable the use of 90R1K4P product in small form factors, MagnaChip will house the device in a small I-PAK package type under the code MMIS90R1K4P. As a result of the die size reduction and choice of packaging, this new MOSFET has the potential to be adopted in a wide range of applications.

Moreover, to ensure 90R1K4P product can be adopted for applications where space is at a premium, the company also can mount the Super Junction MOSFET into the slim SMD (Surface-Mount Devices) package type, D-PAK. It will be available under the code MMD90R1K4P.

As digital signage and media façades are installed outdoors, the display size can range up to several hundred inches, which requires a much higher level of technology and reliability than found in television sets. For LED panels used in digital signage, about 1,000 LEDs per square meter are used. SEOUL, South Korea and SAN JOSE, Calif., June 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip” or the “Company”) (NYSE: MX), a Korea-based designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor platform solutions for communications, IoT, consumer, industrial and automotive applications, announced today it now offers 0.13 micron BCD process technology integrated with high-density embedded Flash. This BCD process offers 40V power LDMOS and delivers 64K Bytes flash memory, making it suitable for programmable PMIC, wireless power chargers and USB-C power-delivery IC products.

Increasingly, products such as programmable PMICs, wireless power chargers and USB-C power-delivery ICs require embedded non-volatile memory and other functions to be integrated onto a single Power IC. Aside from embedded non-volatile memory, which is used for program code storage, these products require power LDMOS, which is well suited for high-power requirements. The inclusion of embedded FLASH is crucial in order to minimize chip size when high non-volatile memory density is required. For IoT and automotive applications, this BCD process provides 1.5V and 5V CMOS devices with a very low leakage current level that enables low-power consumption. Furthermore, this new BCD process has various option devices for Hall sensors, varactors, inductors, and RF CMOS devices that are useful for highly integrated IC solutions, which yield smaller system size and lower system cost.

MagnaChip’s 30V high voltage with embedded Flash process for touch IC is already in volume production, and the new BCD with embedded Flash 40V process announced today is now being adopted by foundry customers. Embedded Flash IP, designed and verified by MagnaChip, reduces foundry customers’ design time by providing proven intellectual property (IP) with a range of diverse memory densities. MagnaChip also verifies and provides key analog intellectual property, such as ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter), DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter), LDO (Low Dropout Regulator), POR (Power On Reset), PLL (Phase Locked Loop), OSC (Oscillator), which reduces design time.

MagnaChip Provides 3rd Party IP, Specialty 0.18 micron BCD process

 

SEOUL, South Korea and SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip”) (NYSE: MX), a Korea-based designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, announced today it has begun volume production of a Power Management IC (PMIC) designed by Himax, a Taiwanese leading fabless company, using MagnaChip’s specialty 0.18 micron BCD (Bipolar CMOS-DMOS) technology process.

MagnaChip collaborated on the PMIC product development with Himax, as both companies plan to expand their presence in the PMIC market. The collaboration follows a similar joint development effort based on MagnaChip’s mature and highly reliable BCD process technology with a major U.S. fabless company. PMIC is a semiconductor that manages and supplies stable power to core chips such as display driver ICs and timing controllers used in digital TVs and monitors.

MagnaChip supported Himax’s product design by providing various process technology options and third-party intellectual property (IP). Volume production commenced approximately one year after the database tapeout of the product, making it possible for Himax to meet its time-to-market goals. With production already underway with Himax, MagnaChip is now engaged on a second product development project with Himax.
